How to verify a 1688 supplier before you order

Four signals that separate reliable 1688 suppliers from risky ones — platform age, response rate, sample willingness, transaction history — plus what a Super Buyer account changes and when to walk away.

Short answer

Before ordering from a 1688 supplier, check four things: at least 3 years on the platform, a response rate above 90%, willingness to send a sample, and a visible transaction history. A supplier failing two or more of those is a walk-away. Ordering through a buying service adds a layer the checks can't: escrow-style dispute handling and negotiation leverage from a Super Buyer account.

The four checks

1. Platform age — 3+ years. A factory that has survived three years of 1688's review system has shipped enough orders to be findable when something goes wrong. New storefronts are not automatically scams, but they are where the scams are.

2. Response rate — 90%+. 1688 publishes it. A seller who ignores messages before you pay will not improve after.

3. Sample willingness. A supplier confident in their goods sends a sample. Refusal on a stock item is a signal; on custom production it is normal (setup cost is real).

4. Transaction history. Volume and repeat purchases visible on the listing tell you other buyers keep coming back — the strongest signal of the four.

What the checks can't cover

Even a verified supplier can ship the wrong colourway or short-count a carton. Two things close that gap:

A sane first-order sequence

  1. Run the four checks on the listing.
  2. Order one unit — judge the product, the true weight, and the lane it ships on.
  3. If it passes, order the real batch (20–100 units consolidates the freight cost down).
  4. On arrival, count and check 5–10% of pieces before signing for damaged packaging; report problems within 48 hours.

Photos lie in both directions. The sample is the only truth.

Frequently asked questions

How do I know if a 1688 supplier is legit?
Check four public signals: 3+ years on the platform, response rate above 90%, willingness to send a sample of stock items, and visible transaction history with repeat buyers. Failing two or more is a walk-away.
What if a supplier refuses to send a sample?
On a stock item, treat it as a warning. On custom production it is normal — the setup cost is real, which is also why custom orders carry genuine minimums.
What recourse do I have if the goods are wrong?
Buying direct with no Mandarin, realistically very little. Through a buying service, the service disputes with the supplier on your behalf and refunds or replaces items that do not match the listing.
What is a Super Buyer account?
A high-tier 1688 buyer account. Sellers offer accounts with real shipping volume access to negotiation they will not give a first-time foreign buyer — typically worth 5 to 10 percent off the listed price when a quote is requested.
How big should my first order be?
One unit. Judge quality, actual weight and shipping lane from the sample, then scale to 20–100 units where consolidated freight makes the per-unit economics work.
