Alibaba.com vs 1688: which one to use from Bangladesh

Both are owned by Alibaba Group but they target completely different buyers. For BD importers, 1688 is almost always 30-60% cheaper than Alibaba.com — here is why, plus how to access it without Chinese.

CIEF Source BD · 05/06/2026

Short answer

Alibaba.com and 1688.com are both owned by Alibaba Group and often list the same factories, but Alibaba.com is the English-language global site with export pricing and higher minimums, while 1688.com is the Chinese-language domestic site at factory-direct prices — typically 30 to 60 percent lower. From Bangladesh, 1688 is cheaper but needs Chinese-language ability, a Chinese bank for Alipay, and a forwarder, because it ships only inside China.

Most BD importers searching "Alibaba" actually mean two different sites: Alibaba.com (English, global B2B) and 1688.com (Chinese, domestic B2B). They're both owned by Alibaba Group, often have the same factories listed, but the pricing and access are very different.

Why same factory, different prices?

Many factories list on both sites. The Alibaba.com listing has marked-up "export" pricing because: (a) it implicitly bundles a small middleman margin for the supplier's English-speaking sales team, (b) it assumes the buyer is unfamiliar with Chinese pricing benchmarks and won't push back hard, (c) MOQs are higher so the per-unit margin can be bigger.

If you can read or translate Chinese pages and pay in CNY, 1688 is the same factory at 30–60% less.

So why doesn't every BD importer just use 1688?

Three real barriers:

  1. Language — 1688 is Chinese-only. Translation works but you miss subtleties in negotiation (e.g., "cross-border supply" vs "domestic only" suppliers — only a fraction will ship across borders).
  2. Payment — 1688 wants Alipay tied to a Chinese bank account. BD-issued cards don't work.
  3. Last-mile — 1688 ships within China only. You still need a forwarder.

This is why services like CIEF Source exist: we maintain a Chinese-speaking team with a Super Buyer (超级买家) account on 1688, handle Alipay on your behalf, consolidate at our Shenzhen warehouse, and ship to your BD address.

When to use which (from BD)

You're doing thisUse this
Small bulk for resale (10–500 units)1688 via a 代购 service
Negotiating a custom factory deal with English-speaking salesAlibaba.com (Trade Assurance protects you)
Want hands-off — just pay, get goods at homeAliExpress (expensive but simplest)
Sample 1 unit before committing1688 via 代购 (Alibaba.com MOQ usually too high)
Industrial / B2B components, technical specsAlibaba.com (better English documentation)

The hidden third option

Most successful BD resellers use 1688 for ongoing inventory (cheapest) and Alibaba.com only for custom-spec deals (better contracts/escrow). The product catalogs overlap massively — once you find your supplier on Alibaba.com, you can often find the same factory on 1688 and order future restocks at ~40% less.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between Alibaba.com and 1688.com?
Alibaba.com serves global wholesale buyers in English with USD pricing and minimum orders around 50 to 500 pieces. 1688.com serves domestic Chinese buyers in Chinese with CNY pricing and minimums often as low as 1 to 10 pieces.
Why is the same product cheaper on 1688?
Alibaba.com listings carry export pricing that bundles a margin for the supplier's English-speaking sales team, assumes the buyer does not know Chinese price benchmarks, and uses higher minimums so the per-unit margin can be larger.
Why can't Bangladeshi importers just use 1688 directly?
Three barriers: the site is Chinese-only, payment requires Alipay tied to a Chinese bank account so BD-issued cards do not work, and 1688 sellers ship only within China, so you still need a forwarder.
When should I use Alibaba.com instead of 1688?
For negotiating a custom factory deal with English-speaking sales, where Trade Assurance escrow protects you, and for industrial or B2B components where the English technical documentation is better.
Can I order a single sample unit?
On 1688 through a buying service, yes. Alibaba.com minimums are usually too high to sample one unit.
