Alibaba.com vs 1688: which one to use from Bangladesh
Both are owned by Alibaba Group but they target completely different buyers. For BD importers, 1688 is almost always 30-60% cheaper than Alibaba.com — here is why, plus how to access it without Chinese.
Most BD importers searching "Alibaba" actually mean two different sites: Alibaba.com (English, global B2B) and 1688.com (Chinese, domestic B2B). They're both owned by Alibaba Group, often have the same factories listed, but the pricing and access are very different.
Side-by-side
| Alibaba.com | 1688.com | |
|---|---|---|
| Audience | Global wholesale buyers | Domestic Chinese buyers |
| Language | English (Spanish, etc.) | Chinese only |
| Currency | USD primarily | CNY only |
| Price level | "Export" pricing (~ +30–60% vs 1688) | Factory direct |
| MOQ | Higher (50–500 pcs typical) | Lower (often 1–10 pcs) |
| Payment | Bank wire, TT, LC, Trade Assurance | Alipay (Chinese bank required) |
| Shipping | Quoted by supplier, you arrange | Domestic only, you arrange international |
| Negotiation | Email / Trade Manager | WeChat / 旺旺 IM |
| Buyer protection | Trade Assurance escrow | Limited; relies on Taobao-style ratings |
Why same factory, different prices?
Many factories list on both sites. The Alibaba.com listing has marked-up "export" pricing because: (a) it implicitly bundles a small middleman margin for the supplier's English-speaking sales team, (b) it assumes the buyer is unfamiliar with Chinese pricing benchmarks and won't push back hard, (c) MOQs are higher so the per-unit margin can be bigger.
If you can read or translate Chinese pages and pay in CNY, 1688 is the same factory at 30–60% less.
So why doesn't every BD importer just use 1688?
Three real barriers:
- Language — 1688 is Chinese-only. Translation works but you miss subtleties in negotiation (e.g., "cross-border supply" vs "domestic only" suppliers — only a fraction will ship across borders).
- Payment — 1688 wants Alipay tied to a Chinese bank account. BD-issued cards don't work.
- Last-mile — 1688 ships within China only. You still need a forwarder.
This is why services like CIEF Source exist: we maintain a Chinese-speaking team with a Super Buyer (超级买家) account on 1688, handle Alipay on your behalf, consolidate at our Shenzhen warehouse, and ship to your BD address.
When to use which (from BD)
| You're doing this | Use this |
|---|---|
| Small bulk for resale (10–500 units) | 1688 via a 代购 service |
| Negotiating a custom factory deal with English-speaking sales | Alibaba.com (Trade Assurance protects you) |
| Want hands-off — just pay, get goods at home | AliExpress (expensive but simplest) |
| Sample 1 unit before committing | 1688 via 代购 (Alibaba.com MOQ usually too high) |
| Industrial / B2B components, technical specs | Alibaba.com (better English documentation) |
The hidden third option
Most successful BD resellers use 1688 for ongoing inventory (cheapest) and Alibaba.com only for custom-spec deals (better contracts/escrow). The product catalogs overlap massively — once you find your supplier on Alibaba.com, you can often find the same factory on 1688 and order future restocks at ~40% less.
